Vice Premier calls for establishment of specific agriculture areas

 (KPL) Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad has urged officials of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry by focusing on establishment of specific agriculture produce areas and modernization.

The path will ensure the achievement of poverty reduction in basically and the UN Millennium Goals and lifting the country out of rank of least developed country and GDP grow by not less than 8%, Mr Somsavat advised at a meeting of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry held yesterday.

Mr Somsavat who is also in charge of national economy, added that over the past 36 years, we could not establish the specific agriculture development areas. Therefore the ministry has been urged to pay actively in the establishment of specific agriculture development areas.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Mr. Vilayvanh Phomkhe reported the general conditions of agriculture resulting negative and positive ways, last year’s large areas of agriculture farming was affected by Haima and Nockten tropical storms leading to the flooding. Over 98,000 ha and 687 irrigation projects in 94 districts, 12 provinces were damaged. The damage cost amounted to over 800 billion kip.

Mr. Vilayvanh added that last year’s plan of rice production did not meet the plan set, which expected its yield of almost 3 million tonnes or 86 per cent reached the plan.

On average per capita was 470 kg.

The implementation of cash crops plantation plan achieved such as planting sweet corn reached 105,500 tonnes, 250,000 tonnes of cassava, 800,000 tonnes of fruits compared to annual plan increased double and 854,000 tonnes of vegetables.

The supply of meat mineral supplied to the country, amounting to 300,000 tonnes, of which 170,000 tonnes of cattle meats, pork, sheep, goat, poultry and egg, 130,000 tonnes of fish.

The market oriented production for domestic and export reached over 3.5 million tonnes, of which 1.8 million tonnes of sugarcane, 920,000 tonnes of maize, 520,000 tonnes of cassava, 71,000 tonnes Job’s tears, 69,200 tonnes of tobacco leaves, 47,000 tonnes of coffee beans, 19,500 tonnes of sesame, 2,000 tonnes of tea and 1,800 tonnes of cotton.

Next nine months, the ministry will further implement the agriculture produce based on the resolution of 9th Party Congress in seven plains and 14 small plains.
